The Importance of Fire Extinguishers in Your Home

Fire hazard is one of the most common electrical hazards we see in the home. This article will address the five main types of fire extinguishers, when to use them and why it is critical to have them in your home.

Type A

  • One of the most common extinguisher types
  • Designed to be used on cloth, wood and paper
  • One of the most versatile options for homes and businesses

Type B

  • Designed specifically for combustibles and flammable liquids
  • Ex: grease, gasoline, oil, liquid-based paints
  • A great option for spaces in the home such as the kitchen or garage

Type C

  • Most common electrical option
  • Used on tools that are plugged in
  • Ex: power tools, appliances, devices
  • Ideal to keep around high energy use areas such as living rooms or back yards

Type D

  • One of the least common extinguisher options
  • Used on liquid metals
  • This option is often used in the factory setting, not the home
  • However, if you are using liquid metals for any reason, it is wise to keep a Type D extinguisher in your workspace

Type K

  • Most commonly used in restaurants
  • Used on common flammable kitchen substances
  • Ex: vegetable oil, animal oils, fats
  • Best to keep in or around the kitchen

Using a fire extinguisher is nothing to be scared of and can be lifesaving. If you find yourself needing to use a fire extinguisher in your home, remember the P.A.S.S. method during use:

  • P – Pull the pin to activate the extinguisher
  • A – Aim low towards the base of the fire
  • S – Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
  • S – Sweep the nozzle from side to side
