Make Sure Your Home is Safe for the Holidays

Having family over for the holidays can feel chaotic. Follow these simple rules to keep your house safe for your guests and remove electrical hazards from your list of things to worry about.

Avoid Overloading Outlets

As a general rule of thumb, never plug many appliances into one outlet. This can overload your outlets and melt wires or circuits to short. Some warning signs of an overloaded electrical circuit are dimming lights and blown fuses.

Childproof Your Plugs

Having family over for the holidays mean the possibility of having kids in your potentially non-childproofed house. Childproofing your plugs can be easy to forget. Luckily, it is an easy fix. Most stores have childproofed plugs you can put into your outlets. If you want to go one step further, have childproof outlets installed in your home.

Check Your Breaker Boxes

With your outlets and appliances being used more often than normal, it is important to check your breaker boxes. If your breaker box is over 50 years old, you should look into getting it replaced, as it most likely will not be able to sufficiently keep up with very elevated energy use.
