Damage Can Be Sneaky – What To Look For When You Inspect Your Roof

When was the last time you took a good look at your roof? Think about what your roof has weathered, or think back to the last time you had it professionally inspected. Storms? Heavy rain? Scorching summers? High winds? Snow? Ice? All of these elements will eventually wear down your roof. The roof on your home is one of the most important pieces of protection for you and your family. If you are hoping your roof will last its whole estimated lifespan, you’ll need to make sure to conduct regular maintenance and schedule for repairs when necessary.

Tip: Make it a habit to check your roof before storm season and before new seasons!

Follow these helpful steps to help your roof stay in tip-top shape:

    1. Find out when your roof was last replaced. Having this knowledge can help you plan better for when it’s time for a new roof.
    2. If you’ve recently bought a house, keep in mind the findings of your roof’s inspection, and make sure to take care of any issues noted.
    3. Perform roof checks as each season changes as well as before typical storm seasons. Give Lion Home Service Roofing & Gutters a call when you see an area that might need further professional inspection.

When we say to check your roof, we want you to keep in mind the following steps and information:

  • Inside:
      • Go through each room to see if there are any dark spots, water marks, staining, or sagging present on any part of the ceiling or even around the tops of the walls.
  • Attic:
      • If you’re able to safely access your attic, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a quick look at your roof from inside the attic. With a flashlight, look for any dark stains, mildew, mold, and any potential water stains.
  • Street View:
      • Sometimes, it’s easier to see any abnormalities from afar. Do you see any spots with missing, cracked, or broken shingles?
      • Is any paint wearing down or peeling?
      • How does the soffit and fascia appear? Soffit helps your attic breath. It provides ventilation and draws heat and moisture away from your home. Fascia is a board which helps secure gutters so they stay in place. It also serves as a cover for the rafters. Both the soffit and fascia can be susceptible to rotting, leaks, discoloration, bowing, or more. If you notice any damage to these areas of your home’s roof, you’ll want to get those repaired as soon as possible.
  • Get A Closer Look On Your Roof:

Tip: You should only go on your roof for a closer look if you are comfortable doing so. Lion Home Service highly recommends safety first. Please call if you would prefer to have us perform a professional roof assessment.

      • Are your gutters clear and free of any clogs? Clogged gutters could lead to overspill which could cause damage.
      • The flashing should be sealed. If you spot any gaps, they would need to be fixed sooner rather than later.
      • The area surrounding chimneys, skylights, and the base of ventilation areas should all be sealed.
      • Attention should be paid to any visible nails that are protruding or bent.

Like we mentioned above, a great time to assess your roof is when the season changes! As we roll into fall, be sure to put this task on your to do list!
